Accomplished author, inspired thinker, well respected statesman Shanta Kumar, who has held the offices of chief minister, union minister and member of parliament, was born on the 12th of September, 1934 in the village of Garh Jamula in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh. Right from childhood, his life has followed a trajectory of trials and tribulations with parental loss and financial challenges creating obstacles in his path of higher education. He became a ‘Pracharak’ as he came in contact with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh at the tender age of 17 years. Thereafter, he gained the degree of ‘Prabhakar’ and completed teacher training course, which was followed by BA and LL.B, while he was teaching in Delhi. In 1953, he plunged into ‘Jammu Kashmir Andolan’ under the leadership of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee and was imprisoned for eight months in Hisar jail.
